Shabbat Service ~ July 31

Sermon: This week features the music of “Shabbat in the Round”.   Rabbi Akselrad will share his thoughts about the central focus of this week’s torah portion Vaetchanan, the meaning of the shema.  The first prayer we learn as a child, the last prayer we recite before we die, the shema is the most widely known prayer, but few know the many layered meanings of this central prayer.

      CONGREGATION NER TAMID

Maintaining Community and Helping Others

We are living in a time requiring everyone to be keeping in touch with "extended family." We're reaching out to YOU asking for your assistance in a timely mitzvah.

Knowing that you, as a trained Friendly Visitor, have a special talent of reaching out and making others feel comfortable, we are inviting you to also be a CNT CONNECTOR.

If/when you agree to be involved with this exceptional group, Roberta will forward names, along with phone numbers, of a few congregants that you agree be in touch with on a weekly basis, for the duration of the pandemic.

Just think how good folks will feel knowing someone outside their home cares about them.  They may need a ride to a doctor's appointment or just a ride to the grocery store.

Don’t worry about what to say— a suggested script will be written for you. You may hear information from those you talk with, if they are in need, that you will want to share with Roberta. Please let her know and she will determine who is the best person to follow up with the congregant.

When you think about this—it’s truly a MITZVAH to be involved this way.

Together we make CNT a special place to belong, for EVERYONE.

If you wish to participate in this project, please let Roberta know ASAP

Sermon: Why Comedian Seth Rogen’s Comments on Israel are No Laughing Matter... @sethrogen

In promoting his new film on HBO Comedian Seth Rogen has gotten himself into quite a pickle…   His controversial comments on a renown podcast have caused some heated debate regarding whether his views are misinformed, intended to be humorous or reflective of many young American Jews when it comes to Israel.

Our Jewish Heritage,

Creating our own Ethical Wills for our children

We will now review "The Best of Pirke Avot" as a precursor to creating our own "maxims for a better life" to future generations (a modern "Pirke Avot/Imahot")

THIS and coming Saturdays, a few people each week will share their 3 favorite Pirke Avot maxims, and we will discuss why they are "among the best".   Afterwards, we will ask each volunteer participant to present several 'maxims for a better life' they would like to pass along to their own children and grandchildren. This exercise will hopefully spark the creation of a complete "Ethical Will" -- the Jewish tradition of writing sage advice to one's children.
