ADULT JEWISH LEARNING

One of the fundamental ways our children learn is from observing what their parents, grandparents and other role models do. Participation in adult Jewish learning sends an ongoing, important message to younger generations that continued growth and development of our Jewish knowledge is a priority. Come be a part of that message. Your participation and attendance in adult Jewish programs and events is sincerely encouraged. Together we will engage in learning and fulfill our commitment to the advancement of our Jewish-selves. You never know what you might learn!

Lifelong Jewish Learning is alive and well at Congregation Ner Tamid.

Please contact the Temple office at (702) 733-6292 for more information about adult education classes.

Torah Study

Study the Parshat HaShavuah, the Torah portion assigned for the week. The Torah, A Modern Commentary is one of the books used for this class and is provided for you during the study group. The group engages in an open discussion on the meaning of the portion and the relevance in today’s world through the use of multiple commentaries and personal reflection. No prior knowledge of Hebrew or text study experience is necessary for this study group, just a desire to learn more about our sacred text.

And Then What Happened…

We read the Torah cover to cover every year: it starts with “In the beginning…” and ends with the death of Moses. And then what happened? Well, quite a lot actually. Go on a fascinating journey through the next phase of Biblical history, including the settlement of Canaan, the fall of Jericho, the rise of the Judges, the warnings of the Prophets, and the rule of the Kings.

The Reform Movement welcomes and supports those who choose to explore Judaism. Jews by Choice are a gift to our people and to our communities. While each person’s path into Jewish life is unique, there are shared questions and experiences that are common to many. We hope to help you find answers to some of your basic queries and to point the way to additional sources. Each Fall we offer educational classes to those considering conversion to Judaism. Hebrew is included in the program. Admittance to this program requires acceptance from Rabbi Akselrad. Now is the time to schedule your meeting with him!

Adult B'Nai Mitzvah

Did you miss the opportunity to become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at the age of 13?

Have you always wanted to study with the clergy and become a more literate Jew? Would you like to learn to read and chant from the Torah? Are you willing to make a commitment of time to the exploration of your own Jewish identity with a small group of like-minded adults?

If you’ve answered “Yes!” to any of the above, then our Adult B’nai Mitzvah Program may be for you. A new adult B’nai Mitzvah began in August 2018. Feel free to contact Rachel Raskin at the Temple office to inquire about future classes.

Adult students in this 16-month program will prepare for their B’nai Mitzvah through basic Hebrew language instruction, as well as stimulating discussions on prayer, the Tanakh and reflections on personal Jewish journeys. At the conclusion of their study, the students will be called to the Torah as a B’nai Mitzvah.
