DEDICATION MARKS JEWISH GRAVES

FACEBOOK          INSTAGRAM

THANKS TO THE LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL’s reporter Bryan Horwath and photographer L.E. Baskow for their FRONT PAGE ARTICLE and photos about the community-wide “Everyone Has a Name” Mitzvah Project that took place on Tuesday, March 11, at Woodlawn Cemetery at 4:00 p.m.

Congregation Ner Tamid’s Rabbi Sanford Akselrad, who’s also the President of the Board of Rabbis of Southern Nevada and Co-chair of the Community Indigent Burial Committee, helped spearhead the “Everyone Has a Name” Mitzvah Project that became a multi-agency effort to fund and dedicate headstones for Jewish people who died without family to provide for them or the financial ability to afford their own funeral costs.

Rabbi Akselrad turned to Jewish Nevada to help fundraise to buy the headstones.

“A fund has been created to last as an ongoing program,” Stefanie Tuzman, President and CEO of Jewish Nevada, said. “We currently have enough to cover the cost of graves for the next few years.”

The need for headstones is a direct result of the local Indigent Burial Program that started as a partnership between King David/ Palm Mortuaries, Bunker’s, Jewish Family Service Agency (JFSA), Temple Beth Sholom, and Clark County Social Services Programs.

On Tuesday, the local Jewish community mobilized to mark the graves of 54 indigent Jews who are buried in Las Vegas, and Rabbis and Cantors from across the Clark County Jewish community presided over the ceremony and school children from Congregation Ner Tamid’s Religious School placed painted stones on the new headstones.

The Review-Journal featured photos of CNT’s Cantor Jessica Hutchings, Rabbi Cookie Lea Olshein, Family and Education Director Hayley Wizig, and Members Kelly, Etta and Mimi Bumgarner, Temple Beth Sholom’s Rabbi Felipe Goodman and Music Director DJ Sinai, Jay Poster, General Manager, King David Memorial Chapel and Cemetery, Dr. Ken Moskowitz, President & CEO, JFSA, and Marla Letizia, Past Chair of the Board of Jewish Nevada.

LAS VEGAS JEWISH SYNAGOGUE HEIGHTENS SECURITY AMID ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR

FACEBOOK

INSTAGRAM

THANKS TO NEWS 3 KSNV-TV (NBC)/ CW TV for featuring CNT’s Rabbi Sanford Akselrad, Cantor Jessica Hutchings, and Executive Director Edward Simon in a news story that aired on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 10:00 p.m. Reporter Ambar Rodriguez’ “Las Vegas Jewish synagogue heightens security amid Israel-Hamas war,” focused exclusively on Congregation Ner Tamid and how it has increased security measures to keep its members safe in the wake of the war in Israel.

The accompanying article read:

LAS VEGAS — After the attack in Israel left hundreds dead and thousands wounded, the Jewish community in Southern Nevada is holding each other a little closer.

Jewish temples in the valley are heightening security amid the Israel-Hamas war.

“It’s been a little hectic, we’ve had to adjust our armed guards and increase security measures, add additional infrastructure like metal detectors wands, and things like that,” said Edward Simon, executive director of the Congregation Ner Tamid.

Simon is in charge of the day-to-day operations including security, which he says is always a top priority.

However, as the conflict continues in Israel, Simon says additional security measures are now in place.

The synagogue always has at least one armed guard on campus, but now it has two.

On top of that, Henderson Police have been assisting by assigning at least one officer to continuously patrol the facility.

Simon says he also sent out an email to the congregation encouraging everyone to arrive for service a little earlier to ensure they can get through security before it begins.

He shared that the Jewish community has always had to be on alert for any possible attacks after this week.

The Congregation Ner Tamid expresses the importance that if anyone does see something that can be perceived as a threat to speak out and say something to someone.

“When the world is at war you can feel so isolated and alone and so when colleagues or friends of another faith say they stand with us that means the world,” said Rabbi Sanford Akselrad.

“HENDERSON RABBI UPPING SECURITY AT TEMPLE AMID WAR IN MIDDLE EAST”

FACEBOOK

INSTAGRAM

THANKS TO 8 News Now KLAS-TV (CBS) for featuring CNT’s Rabbi Sanford Akselrad in reporter Lauren Negrete’s “Henderson rabbi upping security at temple amid war in Middle East.” The news segment focused exclusively on Congregation Ner Tamid’s efforts to keep its Members safe in the wake of the War in Israel. Negrete also mentioned the upcoming Service Prayer for Israel at Green Valley Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at 7:00 p.m.

The accompanying article read:

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — As war in the Middle East continues, the Jewish community in Southern Nevada is doing what it can to stay safe.

Rabbi Sanford Akselrad said Las Vegas is home to more than 5,000 Israelis, many with personal ties to Israel. He said when war like this happens, it brings up “echoes of the Holocaust”, striking fear from nearly 8,000 miles away.

“That is sad, a 12-year-old in Las Vegas is scared something can happen to him because of what is happening in the Middle East,” Akselrad said.

Askelrad said they are upping their security measures at Ner Tamid.

“The police have been very good in patrolling and even parking cars in our parking lot. We’ve hired extra security and taken some internal measures that I think will make people feel a lot better about what’s going on if that’s possible during this trying time,” he said.

Akselrad said Las Vegas is home to many Holocaust survivors and their descendants, and that bloodshed like the past week, brings up the Holocaust.

Rivka Lagstein, who was born in Israel, shared the sentiment saying, “This feels like a second Holocaust, Israel never had anything like that before.”

“We have a saying, every Jew is responsible one for the other and so even though we are proud Americans, we have this tie to Israel that runs deep,” he said.

He encouraged others to educate themselves on the conflict.

“Hamas, in its charter, has called for a jihad, a destruction of Jews, and of Christians. In terms of Israel, they want to wipe Israel off the face of the earth,” Askelrad said.

As for how non-Jewish people can help, he said to simply show support.

THANKS TO FOX5 MORE’s host, news anchor, and challah fan Jason Feinberg for telling Las Vegas about Pop-Up Shabbat that took place on Friday, April 28, 2023, outdoors at the Jackie Gaughan Plaza at El Cortez, from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

It’s an innovative, introspective, all-ages prayer experience right off the Las Vegas Strip. Headliner Mostly Kosher is Disney’s first Jewish band, and is an acclaimed klezmer gypsy-rock band that radically reconstructs Judaic and American cultural music through ravenous klezmer beats and arresting Yiddish refrains. From 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., early birds got to enjoy a Falafel Vegas food truck and a family art activity, and at 8:00 p.m. there was a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream oneg and a Young Adults After Party. Attendees were asked to bring school supplies for J-Cares’ Back-To-School Supply Drive.

Congregation Ner Tamid’s Cantor Jessica Hutchings and Temple Sinai’s Cantorial soloist Heather Klein co-organized the event. They want to produce diverse and meaningful experiences for the entire Reform Jewish community so they’ve produced several Pop-Up Shabbat spiritual events that have included as much of the Las Vegas and Henderson Jewish community as possible with the help of volunteers, renowned Jewish musicians, and co-sponsors Jewish Nevada, the JCC and PJ Library.

“I’m just excited to bring all the Jewish people in the community together for a very special Shabbat, in the heart of our city,” Cantor Hutchings said.

Attendees reserved seats on shuttles running from Temple Sinai and Congregation Ner Tamid, or they parked for free at El Cortez.

THANKS TO THE LAS VEGAS SUN for its Front Page article about this year’s Board of Rabbis of Southern Nevada’s Kristallnacht commemoration, on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, including a public screening of “The Essential Link: The Story of Wilfrid Israel,” a film about an unsung hero of the Holocaust who saved 15 times more people than the famed Oskar Schindler.

The event took place at King David Memorial Chapel & Cemetery, at 2697 E. Eldorado Ln., in Las Vegas. Gard Jameson, Chair of the Interfaith Council of Southern Nevada, who helped facilitate the movie screening and film director Yonatan Nir’s appearance, gave opening remarks and introduced the award-winning director at the event.

Nir spoke about his documentary before the screening and held a Q&A session after.

Congregation Ner Tamid’s Rabbi Sanford Akselrad led a Service at the conclusion of the event that featured local Holocaust survivor, 99-year-old Alex Kuechel, singing “El Malay Rachamim.”

Attendees then brought stones outside to King David’s Holocaust Memorial Plaza to lay them on the plaques that bear the names of the six extermination camps in Poland.

THANKS TO FOX-5 KVVU-TV (FOX) for covering CNT’s Torah Project Kick-Off on Wednesday, September 21.

CNT Members Elaine and Jack Chernikoff, and their son Neil Chernikoff, commissioned the first new Torah for CNT in loving memory of Harvey Alan Chernikoff, Elaine and Jack’s son and Neil’s brother, who was born with learning disabilities and tragically passed away in 2011 at the age of 51.

The Chernikoff family reached out to Rabbi Moshe Druin’s Sofer On Site International, one of the world’s premier Torah Project developers, to create the Torah and bring it to the synagogue.

Rabbi Druin inscribed several of the remaining letters with the Chernikoff family and Members of the Congregation at Wednesday’s ceremony including Rabbi Akselrad and his wife Joni, CNT’s Board of Directors, Sisterhood, Mensch Club, Ritual Committee, Minyan, Social Action, Nevadans For The Common Good, Religious School, Membership Committee and Interfaith Council. CNT’s new Intergenerational Choir sang at the event and was led by Cantor Jessica Hutchings.

The Torah Project will allow CNT Members and the community at large to participate in the inscription of letters and naming opportunities for the five Books of the Torah, special passages, significant verses, weekly portions, and more.

The final Torah letters will be inscribed by Tu BiShvat on Sunday, February 5, 2023.

Writing a new Torah or commissioning the writing of a scroll is the fulfillment of Mitzvah No. 613 – the very last Mitzvah in the Torah.

Rabbi Akselrad joined Esther Finder, president of the Holocaust Survivors Group of Southern Nevada and Generations of the Shoah – Nevada (GS-N), Susan Dubin, library director and education specialist at the Sperling Kronberg Mack Holocaust Resource Center, and Jolie Brislin, the Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Nevada. Vegas PBS’ “Nevada Week” host Amber Dixon talked to the panel about topics that stemmed from the three-part PBS documentary series by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick, and Sarah Botstein called “The U.S. and the Holocaust.” The series “examines America’s response to one of the greatest humanitarian crises of the twentieth century. Americans consider themselves a ‘nation of immigrants,’ but as the catastrophe of the Holocaust unfolded in Europe, the United States proved unwilling to open its doors to more than a fraction of the hundreds of thousands of desperate people seeking refuge.”

Discussion topics included the presence of antisemitism in the United States during the Holocaust, how Holocaust survivors who relocated to the United States were received and treated, the current rise in antisemitism in the United States, and the importance of teaching school children about the Holocaust.

In the wake of The Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, both Las Vegas ABC 13 KTNV (ABC) and News 3 KSNV-TV (NBC) covered the story and aired news segments.

Rabbi Akselrad was featured as a Guest Columnist in the Las Vegas Sun. He shared how he helped deliver six bags of soil from outside all six extermination camps in Poland (Chełmno, Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka, Majdanek and Auschwitz-Birkenau) to install in King David Memorial Chapel & Cemetery’s new Holocaust Memorial Plaza that was dedicated on Sunday, April 24, after a Yom HaShoah Observance. The local memorial will establish a physical place where locals can mourn the loss of family members who were exterminated during WWII. It will also be a place where people can learn about the war and the Holocaust with the monument’s plaques, timeline, and future oral history component.

SAYING GOODBYE IN THE TIME OF COVID

FACEBOOK

INSTAGRAM

THANKS TO Las Vegas Sun Editor Brian Greenspun for sharing a special FRONT PAGE message with Las Vegas this morning regarding CNT’s Rabbi Sanford Akselrad’s article…

“These past two years have taken their toll on all Americans. The challenges from COVID-19, the attacks on our democratic values, the undeniable tribalism that threatens the unity of these United States, and the incredible heartbreak that comes as we lose loved ones who oftentimes must travel to the ends of their lives on their own, quarantined in hospitals or separated by the inability of family to travel during COVID. Words rarely suffice to make sense of it all, but still we try. My friend, Rabbi Sanford Akselrad, shared his thoughts recently about his mother, Marjorie Akselrad’s, passing. They are very personal, to be sure, but I believe they have a universal theme that should give each of us comfort. With Rabbi’s permission, I am publishing them for the entire community.” – Brian Greenspun
